This is an in-depth experience route in Hokkaido specially designed for winter. It starts from the Noboribetsu Hot Spring nurtured by the volcanic landscape, extends to the urban culture and white lights of Sapporo, then goes deep into the arctic world of Asahikawa and the cinematic romance of Otaru, and finally slowly settles the rhythm of the journey in the private hot springs of Jozankei.

The itinerary combines natural wonders, cultural experiences and comfortable vacations: a night walk through Jigokudani filled with white smoke, Ainu indigenous culture, Asahiyama Zoo where penguins walk, wild adventures drifting in the snow, and light and shadow meditation in Tadao Ando’s architecture.

The whole journey is matched with selected high-end hotels and private bathing suites, making the ice and snow trip not only “viewing the scenery”, but also a winter time where the body and mind are gently cared for.

Attraction introduction

【Noboribetsu Hell Valley】

Hell Valley is Noboribetsu’s most representative natural landscape, formed by volcanic activity thousands of years ago. The exposed rock formations, spewing sulfur steam and year-round white mist form a very shocking volcanic landscape. After nightfall, lights guide visitors into the valley. The white smoke and rock walls are looming in the light and shadow, making it like entering a different world. Compared with the magnificence during the day, night walking is more mysterious and fantasy, and it is one of the most recognizable experiences in Hokkaido winter.

【UPOPOY】

UPOPOY is Japan’s first national cultural space with the theme of the Ainu people. It combines a museum and an open cultural park to systematically present the history, beliefs and lifestyle of Hokkaido’s indigenous people. Through dance performances, traditional musical instruments, costumes and craft experiences, visitors can gain a deep understanding of the worldview of the Ainu people coexisting with nature. It is a cultural dialogue that transcends sightseeing and is especially suitable for parent-child and research-type travel.

【Asahiyama Zoo】

Asahiyama Zoo is famous for its “behavioral display” concept, which is characterized by allowing animals to express their nature in an environment close to nature. The winter-only “Penguin Walk” is one of the most popular scenes in Hokkaido. Groups of penguins swinging forward are both healing and shocking. You can also observe polar bears, seals and other frigid animals up close in the park, which is a classic itinerary that is both educational and entertaining.

【Asahikawa Ice and Snow Museum】

This is an ice and snow art space that maintains subzero temperatures all year round. The ice cave, ice sculptures and arctic experience area jointly create a fantasy world of northern winter, where you can experience the arctic corner with temperatures close to the lowest in Japanese history. Fun and shocking at the same time, it is a stop that will leave deep memories for both adults and children.

【Otaru】

Otaru has become a romantic symbol in the hearts of countless people because of “Love Letter”. A large number of Meiji-era warehouse buildings remain along the canal, which are now transformed into glass workshops, cafes and art spaces. The winter snow scene makes the whole city even quieter and gentler, making it one of the most cinematic cities in Hokkaido.

【Toutai Buddha Hall】

The Toutai Buddha Hall designed by Tadao Ando cleverly hides the Buddha statue in the artificial hills, with only the Buddha’s head exposed. After passing through the concrete tunnel, it suddenly opens up, and skylight falls from the top, forming a very ceremonial spatial experience. This is not a visit to a temple in the traditional sense, but more like a meditative journey about light, silence and inner being.

【Noboribetsu Bear Ranch】

Noboribetsu Bear Ranch is located on the top of the Noboribetsu Hot Spring Area and takes about 7 minutes to reach by ropeway. Home to about 60 Japanese brown bears native to Hokkaido, it is one of the largest bear ranches in the world. The park adopts an open design, allowing visitors to observe the living conditions and behavioral characteristics of brown bears at a safe distance. In addition to daily activities, you can also watch the brown bear interactive display and visit the bear theme museum to learn about the ecological environment and conservation status of Hokkaido brown bears. It is a classic visit that is both interesting and informative.

【Nakajima Park】

Nakajima Park is located in the center of Sapporo and is an urban park that combines natural landscapes and historical buildings. The park retains the “Toyohirakan”, an important building from the Meiji period. The overall atmosphere is quiet and full of a sense of the times. It is also one of the filming locations for the Japanese drama “First Love”.

【Hokkaido Shrine】

Hokkaido Shrine is the most representative shrine in Hokkaido, enshrining the patron saint of Hokkaido. The shrine is located in a large forest, and the snowy scenery in winter is solemn and pure. It is an important place for locals to worship and pray, and it also allows tourists to experience Hokkaido’s unique faith and spiritual culture.

【Tengu Mountain】

Mount Tengu is one of the best viewing spots overlooking Otaru city and the bay. You can easily climb to the top by taking a cable car. From the top of the mountain, you can see the streets of Otaru, Otaru Bay and the surrounding coastline. When the weather is clear, you can even see Ishikari Bay and the Shakotan Peninsula in the distance. This is also one of the filming locations for “First Love”. At dusk and night, the city lights gradually light up, and the scenery is layered. It is a very representative viewing experience in Otaru itinerary.

【Jozankei Winter Snow Rafting】

Snow rafting in Jozankei is a winter-only outdoor experience project in Hokkaido. Under the leadership of professional guides, tourists can kayak down the river and move slowly through the ice-covered river. Along the way, you can enjoy the snow valley, ice waterfall and primeval forest landscape up close, which is quiet and pure. This activity is gentle and safe, suitable for guests who are new to winter outdoor activities. It is an ideal way to add elements of natural adventure to your hot spring itinerary.

In terms of catering, the hotel takes Hokkaido’s seasonal ingredients as the core, combined with the presentation of Japanese banquet cuisine, emphasizing the original taste and seasonal feeling of the ingredients. This is not only a hot spring hotel, but also an ideal starting point to slowly “let go” of the body and mind during the journey.

【InterContinental Hotel Sapporo】

Sapporo InterContinental Hotel is located in the core area of Sapporo City. It is a representative of high-end hotels that combines international services with Hokkaido’s urban temperament. The overall design is modern and restrained, with large floor-to-ceiling windows and simple lines showing the openness and order of the city.

This itinerary will stay in a classic room, with an area of about 42 square meters, which is relatively spacious among hotels in Sapporo city. The room has a good view, and you can enjoy the city lights at night, providing a stable and comfortable living experience for two consecutive nights in the city.

The hotel strikes a good balance between transportation convenience, living comfort and service standards. It is very suitable as a base for exploring Sapporo. Whether going to the city’s attractions or traveling to and from surrounding cities, it is very efficient and smooth.

【Jozankei Chalet Ivy】

Chalet Ivy is located in Jozankei Hot Spring Township. It is a high-end hot spring resort hotel with “privacy, quietness, and quality” as its core. The hotel is far away from the hustle and bustle of the city and is surrounded by mountains, forests and valleys. The snow scenery is especially pure in winter.

The deluxe suites you stay in during this trip are approximately 67 square meters in size and are equipped with private hot spring pools. The valley view can be seen from the sliding windows, and bathing in the hot springs at night when the snow falls silently is one of the most representative vacation experiences in Jozankei.

The hotel emphasizes low-key luxury in the design of public spaces and guest rooms, and does not pursue exaggerated decoration, but relies on space proportions, material touch, and natural light and shadow. The catering also pays attention to the seasonal expression of Hokkaido’s local ingredients, drawing a relaxing and complete end to the entire journey.
